1. Is ConvertKit A Right Fit For Me?

ConvertKit is an email marketing solution that's specifically designed to meet the needs of:

  • Bloggers & YouTubers
  • Teachers or Coaches
  • Photographers
  • Musicians
  • Affiliate Marketers
  • Digital Product Sellers

In short, ConvertKit is best suited for online creators. While most email marketing softwares try to cater to everyone under the sun, ConvertKit is clear about its target customers – those who make a living online.

So, if you too make a living on the internet & want to have a community of your own, then give ConvertKit a try. All core features of ConvertKit are designed to help you attract more email subscribers & sell your digital products. I'll talk more about ConvertKit features later in this post.

2. Isn't ConvertKit A Bit Pricey?

Truth be told, yes, ConvertKit is a bit pricey. There're cheaper solutions out there. However, what makes ConvertKit stand out is it's simplicity, design & special features for online creators.

I've found most "popular" email  marketing softwares to be clunky & difficult to use. That's because they're stuffed with hundreds of features that not everyone needs. They aren't focused – from trying to woo the ecommerce stores to real estate players – everyone is on their target audience list.

On the other hand, ConvertKit is refreshingly different. Their simple yet powerful features have been crafted to meet the needs of online creators. Isn't it worth paying more for a solution that's lean & focused?

3. Does ConvertKit Come With Support For Landing Pages?

Yes, ConvertKit comes with support for landing pages. That means you can get started with ConvertKit even if you don't have a website. Simply, choose a landing page template, edit the content & you're good to go.

4. Does ConvertKit Charge For Unsubscribed & Duplicate Subscribers?

No, ConvertKit doesn't consider unsubscribed & duplicate subscribers for pricing purpose.

Example: Imagine, you have the following lists in your ConvertKit account:

  • Newsletter List= 5000 subscribers (Out of these 200 unsubscribed)
  • Product Link Click List = 1000 subscribers (already included in Newsletter List)
  • Customers List = 200 subscribers (already included in Newsletter & Product Link Click Lists)

In this scenario, ConvertKit, for pricing purpose, will consider your number of subscribers as only 4800. That means it won't count unsubscribed & duplicate subscribers for billing.

Here's are the 2 pricing secrets that's no one is talking about:

  • Aweber charges even for an unsubscribed contact. That means if a subscriber unsubscribes to your email list or you happen to delete the subscriber from your list for some reason, that unsubscribed contact will still be counted as a subscriber for pricing purpose.
  • Aweber & Mailchimp also charge for duplicate subscribers. That means if a subscriber is included in more than one list, she'll be counted that many number of times for billing purpose.

So, if you take aforesaid points into consideration, ConvertKit can actually be cheaper than MailChimp or Aweber.

Example: Imagine, you've the following lists:

  • Newsletter List= 5000 subscribers (Out of these 200 unsubscribed)
  • Product Link Click List = 1000 subscribers (already included in Newsletter List)
  • Customers List = 200 subscribers (already included in Newsletter & Product Link Click Lists)

In this scenario, following will be subscribers count (for pricing) of ConvertKit, Aweber & MailChimp:

  • ConvertKit = 4800 ($ 79 a month)
  • Aweber = 6200 ($ 149 a month)
  • MailChimp = 6000 ($ 99 a month – Standard Plan)

5. Does ConvertKit Have An App?

No, presently, ConvertKit doesn't support an android or an iOS app.

6. Can I Cancel My ConvertKit Subscription? What About Refund?

Yes, you can easily cancel your ConvertKit subscription within 30 days of your purchase date. Post-cancellation, the refund will be processed immediately & the amount should appear in your bank account within 3 to 5 days.

To request for cancellation & refund, you'll have to contact the ConvertKit support team.

7. Can ConvertKit Help Me To Migrate From Another eMail Marketing Software?

Yes, you can migrate your old data to ConvertKit by:

  • Following ConvertKit's migration guide
  • Emailing the customer support team
  • Requesting the ConvertKit's migration team to migrate (you need at least 5,000 subscribers for this) or,
  • Hiring an email expert

8. Does ConvertKit Offer A Free Trial?

All ConvertKit plans come with a 14 days free trial. No, you don’t need to enter your credit card information to start the trial.

Sign Up Forms

Your email subscribers' journey will most probably start from a subscription or a sign up form. That's where you'll collect their details like names and/or email addresses. Isn't it?

ConvertKit comes with in-built form builder you can use to create subscription forms easily. Also, you can customize such forms the way you want like:

  • Adding custom color or design
  • Adding custom fields
  • Customizing form format structure (inline, popup or slide in)
  • Adding reCAPTCHA to avoid spammers

ConvertKit sign up forms are also:

  • Responsive (forms look good on all devices)
  • GDPR compliant (As per EU regulations, all sign up forms must be GDPR compliant)
  • Customizable for repeat subscribers (Subscribers won't see the same subscription form after they subscribe)
  • Redirectable (You can redirect the subscribers to a page or a message after successful sign ups)

The best part?

ConvertKit forms can also help you deliver your lead magnets flawlessly. Example: You offer a FREE eBook on your subject as a lead magnet. To download the eBook, the readers have to enter their email address & complete the sign up process. Thereafter, the eBook will automatically get delivered to their email addresses. With ConvertKit forms, you don't need to worry about delivering the lead magnet to your subscribers. Just upload the lead magnet to the sign up form set up & ConvertKit will do the rest.

Last but not least, with ConvertKit form builder, you need not create a sign up form from scratch. There're a ton of sign up templates to help you get started quickly. Just select a template, customize the content & you're good to go.

Here's an example:

Click on "Landing Pages & Forms" link available on the top menu. Then, select "Form" to continue.
How should your sign up form be displayed? Choose your preferred format.
Now, choose your preferred template. You can also start from a blank template.
Here, you can customize the look & the feel of your form. Change colors, borders, content, image, etc.
It's here that you should upload your lead magnet file.

You can embed these sign up forms easily onto your website. Simply click on "embed" link on the top of the sign up form set up page, grab the code & add the same into your website editor.

Landing Pages

As I said earlier, you don't need a website to get started with ConvertKit. Why?. Because ConvertKit comes with an in-built landing page builder. A landing page is a single web page that you can use for various marketing purposes including subscription.

Yes, you can also incorporate sign up forms into these landing pages.

Like the sign up forms, you can customize the landing pages to suit your needs – colors, fonts, borders, text, content, images, etc.

Additionally, you can also do the following with your landing pages:

  • Add google analytics tracking code (Helps you to track number of landing page visitors)
  • Add facebook pixels (Helps you to track the performance of Facebook ads campaigns)
  • Deliver lead magnets (Just like with sign up forms)
  • Prepare a "coming soon" page
  • Prepare a "course sign up" page

Here's an example:

Click on "Landing Pages & Forms" link on the top menu & then select "Landing Page" to get started.
Choose one of the landing page tempates of your choice.
The landing page set up page. Here you can add custom colors, fonts or content, etc.

The best part?

You can connect a custom domain with your landing pages. Example: You just bought a custom domain name & you don't want to build a full-fledged website out of the same. Just a landing page is what you need. In that case, you can simply connect the domain with your ConvertKit landing page.

Go to "Account Settings" & add your custom domain. Thereafter, choose a page URL by clicking on the settings icon on landing page set up page.

Note that ConvertKit landing pages are hosted by ConvertKit itself. You don't need to worry about things like server maintenance, speed, set up, etc.

Email Designer

Every online creator like you wants to delight her subscribers with great-looking emails. That's why ConvertKit comes with an email designer that helps you to craft beautiful emails like a pro.

Here're a few features that make ConvertKit's email designer awesome:

  • Customizable (Change colors, fonts, alignment, etc. the way you want)
  • Save an email design as a template
  • Clean & simple writing experience (no complicated menus)
  • Supports elements like headers, footers, buttons, links, images, videos, divider, lists, html codes, etc.
  • Deeply integrated with Unsplash (more than 100,000 images on a click of a button)
  • Responsive (the emails will look great on any device)

Here's how to use the email designer (I've used a broadcast email as an example, you can also use the designer to create an email sequence):

Click on the "broadcast" link to get started.
Then, click on "New Broadcast" button.
Thereafter, click on the "content" link to open the email designer.
Here's the beautiful email designer. Play around & create a stunning email.

Visual Automation

This is, by far, the most important feature of ConvertKit. Using this visual automation feature, you can build a funnel that your subscribers will go through after they subscribe.

Example: A website visitor visits your website & opts in to become a subscriber. As soon as the visitor becomes a subscriber, she gets a welcome email from you. Thereafter, she continues to receive a series of automated emails(also known as email sequence) educating her about your subject.

In those emails, you've also pitched your course. Now, as soon as she clicks one of the course link, she'll automatically be tagged & added to a new list called "Course Interest List". Now, as soon as she's added to the "Course Interest List", she'll again receive a series of emails specially created for subscribers that have shown interest in the course you offer. Those emails will further convince her to buy your course.

On the other hand, if she ends up buying the course, she'll automatically tagged & added to a new list called "Customer List". Yes, you can up-sell more courses by sending a series of emails to subscribers who're tagged as customers.

And, so on..

The aforesaid level of sophisticated funnel is possible with the visual automation feature of ConvertKit.

The best part?

Creating email funnels in ConvertKit is fun. How?. Enter flow chart. Yes, you can create any level of sophisticated email funnel by dragging-and-dropping various visual elements in the form of a flow chart.

Here's an example:

Click on "Create Automation" button to get started

How will be the subscribers be added?. That's the top of your email funnel. It can either be a form or a landing page. I've chosen a form & named the same as "subscription form"
Now, create a new email sequence. This is nothing but a series of emails your new subscribers will get from you after they subscribe.
This is how the flowchart looks now. Click on the "1st Email Sequence" to create the sequence.
Now, let's create a product link in all emails. Whoever clicks on such links will be added to the "Product Link Click" List.
This is how to create a link trigger. Right click on the link & create a rule.
Now, I would like to send a new email sequence to all who have clicked on the product links. For that, let's create a new condition & filter the subscribers who've clicked on the product link.
I just created a new email sequence for subscribers who clicked on the product link.
I another yet another condition to filter subscribers who actually bought my product. Let's add them to the "Customers" list
I also created a new email sequence for subscribers who've bought my product.

ConvertKit boasts the following additional features:

  • Easy-to-embed & customizable opt-in forms
  • Customizable automatic email triggers (via drag-and-drop flowcharts)
  • Subscribers’ categorization with tags & segments
  • Automatic new blog post notification to subscribers
  • API integration with major digital platforms like Shopify & WordPress
  • Email & live support

My favorite feature is creating email triggers with drag-and-drop flowcharts. It allows you enough flexibility to create an email marketing funnel of your choice.

ConvertKit supports integration with the following important 3rd party apps:

  • Teachable (Helps to create & sell online courses)
  • Shopify & WooCommerce (Helps to sell physical & digital products)
  • Stripe (Helps to collect credit card payments)
  • Webinar Jam (Helps to run webinars)
  • WordPress & Wix (Helps to build a website)

There're many more. Click here to check the complete list of ConvertKit integrations.

MailChimp is one of the closest competitors of ConvertKit. It's pricing plans are the following:

  • Forever free plan (2,000 subscribers) = $0 per month [Very limited features]
  • Growing business plan (5,000 subscribers) = $50 per month [Limited features]
  • Pro plan (5,000 subscribers) = $249 per month [Full features]

Aweber, on the other hand, is also a worthy competitor of ConvertKit. It's pricing plans are the following:

  • Upto 500 subscribers = $ 19 per month [All features]
  • 501 to 2500 subscribers = $ 29 per month [All features]
  • 2501 to 5000 subscribers = $ 49 per month [All features]
  • 5001 to 10,000 subscribers = $ 69 per month [All features]
  • 10,001 to 25,000 subscribers = $ 149 per month [All features]

Personally, I feel that MailChimp & Aweber don’t do well when it comes to ease of use. Also, their UI is not as good as ConvertKit’s.

Therefore, when it comes to beginners, ConvertKit is my ultimate recommendation. As you get used to the nitty-gritty of email marketing, you may switch to MailChimp or Aweber.
